Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese concept of Qi, which refers to the flow of energy throughout the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), when the flow of Qi through meridians or energy channels in the body is disrupted, it can cause illness or pain. Acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s healing response and restores the natural balance by inserting fine needles into the skin to tap into the channels of energy. Acupuncture needles are placed in very specific locations along meridians, which are energy channels. These energy channels align with fascia and connective tissue lines, as well as nervous system pathways. the acupuncture points along these channels are physiologically unique. They don’t look the same as all the tissues right around the point. Acupuncture points are areas where fibers are bundled more closely together. When a needle goes into the unique vascular area that composes an acupuncture point along an acupuncture channel, it does several things:
- Acupuncture creates an immune response. Because the body sees an acupuncture needle as a foreign object, and one that has created a micro-injury to the tissue, it stimulates immune and circulatory functions. Fresh blood is sent to the site of the needle. Mast cells at the needle site release histamine, heparin, and kinin protease. This delays the blood clotting aspects of the repair phase and has a positive anticoagulation effect
- Acupuncture needles signal fibroblastic activity. The fibroblast cells that help produce and maintain the connective-tissue matrix become enlarged and flattened. In response, the cell releases ATP into extracellular space. ATP participates in the change in cell shape relaxing connective tissue, and also converted into breakdown products with analgesic pain relieving effects.
- Acupuncture affects the electrical system of the body. By creating or enhancing closed-circuit transport in tissues, it facilitates healing by allowing the transfer of material and electrical energy between normal and injured tissues.
- Acupuncture stimulates the release of chemicals/hormones in the brain. Norepinephrine, acetylcholine and several other types of opioids are released, affecting changes in their turnover rate, normalizing the autonomic system, and reducing pain.
Acupuncture can provide treatment for:
- Emotional disorders (anxiety, PTSD, depression)
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Dental pain
- Immune disorders
- Gynecological issues(infertility, menopause, etc)
- Lyme disease
- Musculoskeletal and neurological disorders
- Eye, ear, nose and throat disorders
- Male health
- Pediatric issues
The practice of cupping was widespread in the ancient world. Suction from cupping draws fluid into the treated area. This suction force expands and breaks open tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin. Your body treats the cupping area like an injury. It sends more blood to the area to stimulate natural healing. Cupping has been used to increase the blood circulation and promote relaxation of tense and stressed muscles and ease chronic pain throughout the body and regulate the autonomic nervous system.
Pediatric Acupuncture Noninvasive Approaches
Laser acupuncture: The laser creates more available energy for the cell which increases nitric oxide production which is responsible for better circulation. Red light has also been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects.
Shonishin: This method does not involve the use of inserted needles. It dates from the 17th century. Targets regions of the body rather than acupuncture points. Effective in treating a wide range of mental-emotional disorders. Restores and stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanism. Regulates the autonomic nervous system and releases oxytocin into the body.
Gua Sha: Gua means to ‘scrape’ or ‘scratch’, and Sha is ‘cholera, heat, skin rash’. The technique of Gua Sha intentionally brings the Sha (rash) to the surface. Gua Sha is used where pain, heat and stagnation are present.
Chinese herbal medicine is a part of TCM. Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant-based, although some preparations include minerals or animal-based products. Different herbs have different properties and can balance and regulate particular parts of the body.
Sound Therapy –
Placed directly onto the fully-clothed body, himalayan singing bowls are played using felt mallets, to create a soothing sound and gentle vibration. The bowls are strategically placed around the body, working through the meridian points, sending vibrations through the body and creating a flow of sounds and energy which encourages harmonization and deep relaxation. Based on the theory that vibration releases trapped energy that’s been stored within the body, this type of massage uses sound waves to produce gentle rhythmic pulsations. These pulsations or vibrations are strategically sent through the body, massaging the cells, working out any stored up tension. Simultaneously, the range of frequencies emitted by the bowls has a calming effect, drawing the brain into a meditative state.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on healing modality that focuses on the wave-like rhythmic pulse that goes through the entire body. This therapy stems from osteopathy, which is an approach that emphasizes the role of the musculoskeletal system in health and disease. The practitioner notes what he or she perceives at selected points on the body and in the craniosacral system (the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord), as well as the client’s attitude and intentions. The goal of craniosacral therapy is to help get rid of restrictions in this system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
